Statement regarding a proposed European Breakaway League

The Leeds United Supporters’ Trust remain resolute in its view that any attempt to create a breakaway European competition is contrary to the interests of the game and most importantly contrary to the interests of genuine football fans who have, over the course of the 132 years of English league football history, been the heartbeat and lifeblood of the game.

We stand with fans across all clubs to call upon any clubs that have become signatories to rethink their plans and if they do not wish to, then for the football authorities to take significant measures to halt this attempt to divide the game that we care so much about simply for the sake of greed.

Already the game is split by deep financial fault lines and the action of creating a new breakaway franchise format that protects the monetary interests of certain clubs at the cost of fair competition is abhorrent and as such we stand against it.

We have been pleased that in discussions with our Club, we have been reassured that the current ownership and management structure would stand with us against such a breakaway. Long may that be the case.

Football has for too long now been gradually being prised from the hands of the fans that have sustained it and grasped at greedily by those billionaires who wish to establish their own interests at the heart of the sport. From this day forward we call on all fans to make a stand.

We back wholeheartedly the call by the Football Supporters’ Association to fight against its creation.
